I have been seething for days.

Normally I do not use this blog as a forum for any kind of discussion of current political events.  I have friends of all different political ideologies and I am not prepared to debate any of my personal beliefs in this kind of forum.

About all I will say is I am a moderate person politically who sees lots of gray in life and have voted for both Republican and Democratic candidates. I USED to consider myself Politically Incorrect.

The events of this past weekend during the final part of the health care debate in the House of Representatives has finally made me say something.

I don’t care what your views on the issues are but I want to know when it became acceptable to shout derogatory remarks at elected officials of this country in the halls of congress?

John Lewis -One of the major participants in this country’s civil rights movement having to endure being called the “N” word.

Barney Frank – Homophobic epitaphs being unleashed at one of our senior elected officials.

I have been to congress and felt as if I was in a special place.  Name calling of this sort is improper anywhere but especially so in the halls of congress.

The Tea Party demonstrators claim to love our country but do they even respect it and it’s institutions?

I am a firm believer in political activism and questioning the actions of our elected officials. But do we really want to become a country of such severe hate towards others whose beliefs may be different from our own?

How can there be dialogue with actions like these.

The Tea Party claims their dissatisfaction with our President is not racially or hate motivated and me with my “Pollyanna” view of things believed this.  I thought they were just acting from a place of fear.

Until now.

Pissed Off Looking Six Toed Cat at Ernest Hemingway's House in Key West

It was announced that the Key West Home of Ernest Hemingway has been named a “Literary Landmark”.  The home is the location where he wrote “For Whom The Bell Tolls” and “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”.  There is no doubt that this is a deserving and long overdue designation by the “American Library Association”.

That part is a good thing.

The part that bothered me was that neither The Huffington Post or the AP Release they cited as source material mentioned the other famous thing about this property –  The Six Toed Cats on the property that are descendants of an original cat owned by Hemingway (click here for more info).

Ernest Hemingway

Naming something as a landmark is GREAT but if we REALLY want to encourage people to go visit, we need to remind them about the Six Toed Cats.

I’ve been there with my wife and I have toured the property.  I don’t remember much about the house but I do remember the Six Toed Cats.

How excited do you the think the kids are going to be about going to see a dead author’s house when the Carnival/Disney cruise ship stops in Key West.  Not Very.

Tell the kids that it is – THE MUTANT CAT HOUSE!! - They will be racing to see who gets there first.

Sneaky way to get your kids edumacated so they can be sophisticated writers like Hemingway.  Not writers of shlocky blogs.

Jabori Harris - Soon to be unemployed - Macy's Wrapper

I saw an article over the weekend that made me sad for the future of American Society.

Macy’s will be ENDING their gift wrapping service in all but a few stores.

Due to the popularity of gift bags.

Maybe I’m just Old School but I find this vulgar and an affront to proper civilized society.

Are people going to put their gifts of wedding china and silver in gift bags?

Maybe it doesn’t matter – don’t most people register at Target and Crate and Barrel nowadays?

I’ll admit, I haven’t used the service in years but it was nice knowing it was there.

If I want gift wrapping I guess I’ll have to go to Belk in Canton, GA. – YECHH! – It’s hard to act Hoity Toity when you are giving a gift from Belk.

Bail Money

March 9, 2010

I got a message from a friend last night wanting me to bail them out of jail.  My response was -

ROT THERE!!!

I ended up sending bail money though because it was a MDA jail.  As in a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

She was lucky.  If it was real jail I wouldn’t have bothered – I think she might be a flight risk.

She’s out now but you can still donate to MDA if you want to make her look good. – (click here).

UPDATE – 10:15 P.M. EST 2/26/10.  It Appears the story was not true!!! Per This Vanity Fair Online Post by Juli Weiner (CLICK HERE TO VIEW)

The Famous Nipple Picture

I am in shock.

There has been speculation for almost 40 years about who was the subject of Carly Simon’s classic “You’re so Vain”.

 The answer is David Geffen?

Not Mick Jagger, not James Taylor, not David Bowie, not Kris Kristofferson, not Cat Stevens or the most heavily rumored Warren Beatty.

David Geffen?

Dick Ebersol paid $50,000 a few years ago to find this outIf I were him I’d be pissed.

David Geffen?

One story is that she finally announced it to raise her visibility prior to a new album being released.

David Geffen?

David Geffen - Circa 1970's

“All the girls dreamed that they’d be your partner”

David Geffen?

Remember the fake rumors a few years ago about David Geffen being in a relationship with Keanu Reeves and taking him shopping for “outfits”?

David Geffen?

Carly Simon should have taken this to her grave.

Jeb Bush has not resigned from the Florida Republican party.

But my Mother did and she was a dues paying member.

All I will divulge here is that it was unhappiness with the direction and organization of the state organization.  She had given up on having any influence in the national party YEARS AGO.

This is someone who has been a lifelong supporter of Republican politics and is a true loss for this group.  I am sure they didn’t notice or care, which is truly a shame.

My mother has been active in Republican politics since the late 50’s early 60’s.  Her political activism started in Houston, Texas back when  “Republican” was still a dirty word in Texas.  She was a Block Captain, worked on the first congressional campaign of George Herbert Walker Bush (aka Old Man Bush) even dancing with him once at a party function.  At the time I was born, my parents received congratulatory letters from both future president Bush and one of his staffers someone named James Baker.

She was a Goldwater Republican.  Kept up appearances by publically supporting Richard Nixon through the Watergate scandal – “he wasn’t doing anything different than anybody else, he just got caught” was the party line in our house.

The funniest incident involving her political activism was during the 1976 campaign of Gerald Ford. When our house was being inundated by mailings on a daily basis from both the Republican Party  and the Ford campaign.  We received a phone call that began with the caller saying “this is Betty Ford” my mother’s response was “really?”  Well the call was from Betty Ford but it was from the Betty Ford who lived in our neighborhood and wanted me to mow her yard, not THE Betty FordI think she is disappointed to this day.

Her glory days were the Reagan years – she was in heaven!  Not a bad word could be said about Nancy or Ronnie.  She absolutely worshipped them.  My parents even hosted viewing parties for his initial Televison addresses.

Of course there was support of the senior George Bush during his campaigns and presidencies.  She attended the state conventions in the late 90’s and 2000 even acting as a state delegate for Lamar Alexander.

The Clinton years were a blackhole to my parents.

I noticed some weakening of support during the “W” years but no visible crack until the primary season for the 2008 election.

I don’t know if she ever publically admitted it, but among family she voiced support for the antichrist of the Republican party.

HILLARY CLINTON!!!

At that point the handwriting was on the wall.

My Father declined comment for this post.

(note – despite being raised in this environment and living in conservative GA I do not identify myself as Republican)
